Buying a sports car means you are willing to make some sacrifices, in running costs and practicality, for a car that offers good looks and a fun driving experience. Powerful engines and pretty body shapes mean they tend to cost more than family cars, but the sports car world stretches from the humble Mazda MX-5 right the way through to the pricy BMW i8.
In our top-ten list we have chosen to ignore models such as the Volkswagen Scirocco and Vauxhall Astra GTC because there's little to separate them from the conventional hatchbacks that they are based on. Keep reading to find out what cars make it onto Carbuyer's list of the Top 10 Best Sports Cars.

You could be forgiven for not realising the third-generation Audi TT is new at all, such its its visual similarity with the second-generation model. But under the skin everything is just that little bit better. The interior sets a new benchmark for sports cars, with a configurable high-definition screen replacing analogue dials. The steering is sharp, and it's huge fun to drive on a winding country lane. It even rides over bumps comfortably. Choose a 2.0-litre petrol engined model and you have a very fast car on your hands, but we'd recommend the slightly slower - but far more economical - TDI Ultra diesel model.
4Porsche Cayman coupe
| Porsche Cayman coupKey points 4.4 / 5 Price £39,694 - £64,451 |
The Porsche Cayman is quite a pricy piece of kit, but it’s hard to think of a more complete sports car. On the outside, it boasts a sports car presence thanks to a wide body, spoiler, and air intakes mounted ahead of the rear wheels. Just like a Formula 1 racer, the Cayman is mid-engined for lots of grip in the corners, while its superb engine sounds great and delivers strong performance. Even on a boring motorway slog the two-seater Porsche is a joy thanks to its quiet and classy interior.

9 Jaguar F-Type coupe

When a car looks as good as the Jaguar F-Type there’s always the worry that the driving experience wont live up to expectations. Thankfully, that’s not the case and the F-Type lives up to its billing as a modern interpretation of the classic Jaguar E-Type. The F-type can be fitted with a range of powerful engines that give the Jaguar effortless performance and an excellent long-distance cruising ability, but come at the price of high running costs. The car’s a strict two seater, but does offer a generous 407 litres of boot space.
10 BMW M4 coupe

| BMW M4 coupe, Key points 4 / 5 Price £57,055 |
BMW’s formula for fitting powerful engines to a practical coupe body shape has been popular since the launch of the original BMW M3 back in 1985. The BMW M4 replaces the old BMW M3 coupe and brings more power with it. The turbo-charged engine makes overtaking effortless, but its hi-tech design also means improved fuel economy. It’s just a shame that it doesn’t sound as sporty as the old M3’s huge V8 engine. BMW has given the M4 a more aggressive look than the standard 4 Series coupe, but you still get useable back seats and a 445-litre boot.
